Getting Here from Cumberland
Two routes work, and both are simple.
Washington Street, the direct route:
US 40 runs straight through Cumberland and becomes East Washington Street. Follow it west and turn north on Shadeland Avenue. This is the historic National Road, the original federal highway west, and it still functions as the main east-west street on this side of the county.
Interstate 70, the fast route:
Pick up Interstate 70 west and exit at Shadeland Avenue. This route avoids the traffic lights and the school zones on Washington Street.
Neither route involves the Interstate 465 loop, which is the practical difference between shopping here and shopping on the north side.
The Mailing Address Question
Cumberland has an Indianapolis mailing address, and that trips up online searches more than it should.
The town is its own municipality with its own town government and its own town hall on East Washington Street, straddling the Marion and Hancock county line. But mail addressed to a Cumberland home reads “Indianapolis, IN 46229.” Search for a dealership “in Cumberland” and you may get results scattered across the whole Indianapolis metro, most of them nowhere near you.
The useful frame is ZIP 46229 and the US 40 corridor rather than the city name. On that basis we are close, and a result that looks equally close by city name may not be.

Service and the Salt Belt
Being close matters more for service than for buying. You buy a car every few years and you service it two or three times a year, and a service department a short drive from home is the difference between keeping a maintenance schedule and letting it slide.
Winter here is worth planning for, though not in the way people expect. Central Indiana averages 25.5 inches of snow a year, which is below the national average of about 28. The problem is not depth but the swing and the salt: 2023 brought 5.7 inches across the whole calendar year, 2025 brought 31.6. Indiana’s transportation department spread 257,000 tons of salt statewide in the 2024 to 2025 season, and Indianapolis city crews added more than 24,000 tons of their own, against roughly 14,000 in each of the two winters before.
That salt is what actually threatens a car on the east side. US 40 and Interstate 70 are both heavily treated routes, so a Cumberland commuter spends the winter driving on treated pavement. A wash that includes the undercarriage through February, and a look at the brake lines and exhaust in the spring, are worth adding to the normal schedule here.
