The 2026 CR-V comes two ways, and the choice is not close to a tie. The hybrid returns 10 more miles per gallon combined and makes more usable power. The gas model costs less to buy, tows 500 pounds more, and holds 3 cubic feet more cargo behind the back seat. Which one is right depends on whether you drive a lot of miles or haul a lot of things.

Buy the hybrid if you drive a lot. Buy the gas model if you carry a lot or want the lowest entry price. At 15,000 miles a year, a front-drive hybrid burns about 375 gallons against the gas model’s 500. That is roughly 125 gallons a year you do not buy, and in all-wheel drive the gap narrows only slightly, to about 112 gallons. Against that, the gas CR-V holds 39.3 cubic feet in the back where the hybrid holds 36.3, it tows 1,500 pounds to the hybrid’s 1,000, and it starts lower: the cheapest gas CR-V launched at $30,920, the cheapest hybrid at $35,630.

Both are the same vehicle underneath: same 184.8-inch length, same 106.3-inch wheelbase, same five seats, same 14-gallon tank, and a 5-star overall crash rating from the federal safety program. Both take regular unleaded.

Two Different Powertrains

The gas CR-V uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 190 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 179 pound-feet of torque from 1,700 rpm, through a continuously variable transmission.

The hybrid pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder, rated 145 horsepower, with an electric motor rated 181 horsepower and 247 pound-feet. Honda’s two-motor system produces 204 horsepower total, driving through a direct drive unit rather than a conventional gearbox.

The torque figure is what you feel from a stop. The electric motor delivers its 247 pound-feet from zero rpm, so the hybrid pulls away from a light more urgently than the horsepower gap suggests. Neither takes premium fuel.

Note which way the hybrid leans. The gas model does its best work on the highway, 33 against 28 in the city. The hybrid reverses that, 43 in the city against 36 on the highway, because stop-and-go driving is where the electric motor and regenerative braking earn their keep.

That reversal is the practical decision point. A commute down Interstate 70 into downtown, or the stop-and-go crawl on the Interstate 465 loop at rush hour, is exactly the driving the hybrid is built for. A steady 65-mph run out to a job site is closer to the gas model’s home ground, though the hybrid still wins there.

The TrailSport gives up a little economy to its all-terrain tires.

Cargo and Towing

The hybrid gives up cargo space and towing capacity.

  • Cargo behind the second row: 39.3 cubic feet gas, 36.3 hybrid.
  • Cargo behind the front row: 76.5 cubic feet gas, 71.8 hybrid.
  • Towing capacity: 1,500 pounds gas, 1,000 hybrid.

Three cubic feet is roughly one large suitcase, and for most buyers that will not decide it. Towing might: 1,500 pounds covers a small utility trailer or a single personal watercraft on its trailer, while 1,000 pounds is closer to a light cargo trailer. Buy the gas model if you tow near that limit. The Sport Touring hybrid has still less cargo room, at 34.7 cubic feet.

The trim ladder crosses the powertrain line, which complicates a straight comparison. A gas EX-L and a hybrid Sport sit within $230 of each other at launch, but they are equipped very differently. The EX-L brings leather, a power tailgate and parking sensors. The Sport brings the hybrid powertrain, a 4-mode drive selector and blacked-out trim.

Which One Fits

  • Which trim should you choose? Start with the powertrain, not the trim, because that decision is worth 8 to 10 mpg combined depending on drivetrain, and it sets which half of the table you are shopping. Then take the lowest trim on that side that carries blind spot monitoring, which means the EX on the gas side and the Sport on the hybrid side. Everything above those two is comfort and appearance rather than capability, with one exception: the TrailSport, which is the only CR-V with all-terrain tires.
  • Buy the gas CR-V if: you want the lowest entry price, you tow anything near 1,500 pounds, you want maximum cargo room, or most of your miles are steady highway. The LX is the value pick, though it is worth knowing what it leaves out.
  • Buy the hybrid if: you drive high annual mileage, most of it in city and suburban stop-and-go, or you want the stronger low-speed response. The Sport is the entry point.
  • One warning on the LX: the base gas trim does not offer blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alert, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, smart entry or a moonroof. Honda Sensing is standard on it, as on every trim, but the blind spot system is separate equipment that starts at the EX. If blind spot coverage matters to you, the real comparison is the EX against the hybrid Sport, not the LX.

All-Wheel Drive in This Market

All-wheel drive is available on the LX, EX, EX-L, Sport and Sport-L, and comes standard on the two top hybrids. It costs $1,500, and it costs fuel economy differently depending on the powertrain: 1 mpg combined on the gas CR-V, 30 against 29, but 3 on the hybrid, 40 against 37.

Whether you need it here is a fair question. An average Central Indiana year brings 25.5 inches of snow against a national figure near 28, but the range is the part that matters: 5.7 inches in 2023, 31.6 in 2025. Roughly one winter day in four has at least an inch of snow on the ground, and 10-inch single-day storms are not normal here.

All-wheel drive is insurance against a bad winter rather than something an average one demands, and the added ground clearance, 8.2 inches against 7.8, is the more consistent benefit on unplowed side streets. Winter tires on a front-drive CR-V are the other way at the same problem, and they address traction on ice, which all-wheel drive does not.
