The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is legendary amongst racing enthusiasts. Thousands gather to watch heart-pounding races and cheer on their favorite drivers. But did you know there’s a museum in the center of the action? Here’s why you should check out the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.
1. Fantastic Track Tours
Everyone who comes to the museum wants to experience the thrills of the track. The museum offers a variety of tours designed to get visitors up close to the action. The popular Kiss the Bricks tour allows guests to take a lap around the track. At the finish line, they can then get down and “kiss the bricks” of the original 1909 surface. For photo ops, it doesn’t get any better than this.
2. Behind the Scenes Tours
Exclusive tours are often available, giving visitors the chance to see areas not normally available to the public. One fun example is the basement tour which allows car lovers to get dirty with the vehicles and artifacts in storage.
3. Meet Hall of Famers
Turn the past into living history when you visit the museum on the Hall of Fame Day. Fans will be able to snap a picture with drivers, mechanics, and other personnel, or simply shake hands with a winner. Autograph sessions are also available. A limited number of lucky fans can bring in all sorts of wacky objects to have signed. Just keep in mind, there’s a two object limit for signing.
4. So Many Cars
The museum first opened in 1956 with a limited number of cars, both modern and vintage. Soon increased demand caused them to move into their brand new space in the center of the racing oval. Today, visitors can see over 300 vehicles, tens of thousands of pieces of memorabilia, 200 works of art, and the Auto Racing Hall of Fame. Exhibits rotate and range from driver biographies to rare car collections.
5. Adopt An Exhibit
Visitors can bring home a piece of history when they adopt an exhibit. Funds go toward general museum upkeep but also specifically toward maintenance for their chosen vehicle. Adopting an exhibit is the closest thing to feeling the adrenaline of the pit crew.
6. Immersive Events
The museum hosts many events, from hosting speakers to memorabilia meets. One of the more popular events is Fuel Up Fridays. Museum members can grab a coffee and stroll the museum. Casual conversation is encouraged, and you never know who will make an appearance. Reporters, drivers, and motorsport personalities have all been known to show up.
7. Take Home a Piece of the Action
Most race cars are too expensive for the average fan, but the museum allows visitors to feel like they own a piece of one. The License Plate Program gives fans the chance to purchase an official speedway plate.
Nothing beats a race car for speed and performance, but a sleek Honda Accord comes close. Honda offers many cars that are fun to drive but won’t break the budget. Come down to Ed Martin Honda today and test drive a a new Honda!
