Unique Spots Indianapolis, INIndianapolis has lots of iconic attractions, from the Speedway to the zoo. However, there are also a number of lesser-known gems that can be fun for the whole family. Here are a few unique spots in Indianapolis to explore.

Catacombs Tour

While these aren’t really catacombs with tombs, after Tomlinson Hall burned to the ground in 1958, a huge underground storage labyrinth still remained. The Roman-looking brick arches are an unusual site, hidden from public view under Whistler Plaza of City Market. Scattered through the catacombs, you’ll see different objects, like chairs, that according to the tour guide disappear and reappear without explanation in different locations. The Catacombs tour is available on the first and third Saturday of every month, from May until October.

Rhythm! Discovery Center

If you’re looking for a fun activity to enjoy with your kids, try the Rhythm! Discovery Center.  As the world’s foremost drum and percussion museum, we promise this stop will be one that adults and kids alike will love. The Center provides innovative programs, educational exhibits, and artist performances. Let your kids run wild, banging on drums, playing with weird percussion instruments, and learning about the origin and history of the drum.

Indianapolis Roller Derby

Another unique activity that you should consider when you’re in Indianapolis is watching the Naptown Roller Derby (NRD). The women on the team are incredibly competitive, and you’ll be amazed at the fearlessness they display when in the game.

Museum of Miniature Houses and Other Collections

To try something extremely unique, head over to the Museum of Miniature Houses. This museum is home to dozens of miniature houses built in different decades and reflecting different design styles and architecture. The Sherlock Holmes room is particularly popular. You’ll be blown away by the artistry, skill, and detail that went into creating these miniature houses.

Speedrome

If you love racing, you should probably stop by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the home of the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 500. However, if you want to avoid the tourists and try something a little different, head over to the Indianapolis Speedrome. This speedway is home to the World Figure 8 race, a form of stock car racing where vehicles race on a track that purposefully intersects to increase the risk of collisions.

The Speedrome track is small, which means you are never too far from the action as you’re watching all the different types of amateur racing. The World Figure 8 is also one of the most exciting races to watch in the world. However, even if you can’t make it to the World Figure 8, families are guaranteed to have a good time while watching any of the live events at this speedway.

Crown Hill Cemetery

If you want a thrill, head over to the Crown Hill Cemetery. This cemetery is home to over 200,000 graves and is the final resting place of soldiers from every American war as well as the notorious gangster John Dillinger. There are also reports of encounters with the ghosts of wounded soldiers.

Whether you’re in the mood to hunt for ghosts, watch roller derby, or bang on some drums, Indianapolis has a little something for everyone. We hope you get the opportunity to try a number of these activities during your visit.
