Indiana Dunes State Park

This impressive phenomenon which features over 2.000-acres of dunes is located just two and a half hours from Indianapolis. The park provides visitors with plenty of activities to enjoy. Countless hiking trails take you through picturesque scenery and nearby Lake Michigan is perfect to swim in when the weather is right. If you’re a fan of camping, there are many designated campsites for you to sleep under the stars.

 

Marengo Cave

These incredible cave formations were discovered in 1883 by Orris and Blanche Hiestand. They are only one of four caves open to the public. Add some adventure to your day trip by venturing into these cave formations with guided tours known as the Dripstone Trail Tour and the Crystal Palace Tour. Each one takes between 40 minutes to an hour and is fun and informative. Marengo Cave is located just two hours from Indy by car.

 

Whitewater Valley

If your a fan of locomotive history, you’ll love visiting Whitewater Valley and the historic Whitewater Valley Railroad. This track is one part railroad, one part museum, with train rides to different scenic areas on unique trains. You can enjoy a ride on their Weld West Train, Santa Claus Limited, Foliage Flyer, or the Metamora Canal Excursion. It’s just an hour away from Indianapolis by car, and well worth the trip!

 

Holiday World

Holiday World and neighboring Splashin Safari is the perfect spot for families looking for a fun-filled day. Although it’s located in Ohio, it’s still very close to Indianapolis. So you not only get to visit one of the best theme parks around, but you also have the opportunity to visit a different state! The park is full of roller coasters, water slides, and plenty of family-friendly live entertainment. It’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Indianapolis.

Patoka Lake

If you want to make the most of your summer, a day trip to Patoka Lake has just what the doctor ordered. You’ll find a cornucopia of outdoor activities to enjoy, including swimming, fishing, boating, and more. Boat tours are also available that take you throughout this reservoir, which is the second-largest in the country. You can also rent a floating cabin to experience a new way of lounging by, or on, the lake.

Brown County State Park

Located in the friendly town of Nashville, Brown County State Park gives visitors picturesque views and plenty of nature-filled activities.
